what do i look for when buying a whole house water filter and water softener?

i’m on a well,so i buy bottled water, but i want to install a whole house water filter and water softener for health reasons.i’m worried about washing clothes and taking showers with the well water my affect my family in an unhealthy way.thanx

Well water is more difficult to purify than city water. I would not just go and listen to a water softener salesperson at say Sears to make a decision. I would call out a water expert and analyze the water for hard to remove substances commonly found in well water like iron, sulfur, nitrates and nitrites from fertilizers. Get their recommendations so if you do this you do it right. Once you remove the really bad stuff you may want to install a reverse osmosis system they work great. And the best place to buy one is on Ebay, they have the best systems and the best prices.

Find out possible contamination (previous farm land? Pesticide?) match a filter to the contaminates. Water-softener look for price.

Generally speaking, well water is high in iron.
If you have children you should take them to the dentist for fluoride treatments or administer them yourself.
Children that grow up without fluoride in there drinking water usually experience more Dental problems than kids that consume treated city water.
