Pond Sand Filter – Pros & Cons

The Pond Sand Filter is a device that takes pond water and makes it safe to drink by filtering out bacteria that is harmful to human beings. It’s a proven technology but it has its limitations.

Pros
- No fossil fuels, solar power, or electricity required
- Nearly effortless to pump
- Purifies enough water everyday to provide hundreds of families clean & safe drinking water
- The water purified is safe enough to be used for cooking (low or no iron in the water)

Cons
- Limited lifespan (minimum two years), needs to be replaced eventually like any filter
- Increased complexity vs. the deep tube well (Murphy’s Law – more can go wrong)
- More vulnerable to vandalism than a deep-tube well (can unscrew and steal the faucets, etc)

The person in the video is a local villager. She’s not an expert in pond sand filters – but I wanted to see what the local perception of Pond Sand Filters are.

I had to check your youtube channel to see why you were so incredulous. This isn’t a Pond Sand Filter for your garden. PSF (Pond Sand Filter) is the name in this part of the world for a water purification system that turns pond water into DRINKING WATER for people in rural village.

If I was fundraising by PayPal to decorate my backyard, that would be a completely different (and definitely ridicule-worthy) issue.

hey kisablackrose – I actually home right now just visiting the family for a bit. I’m not sure how long I’m doing this project – so not sure where I will be two years down the road..

I accept donations by PayPal – that’s the best for me and its also super easy. Although it does take a cut from the donations…

    how much does this …
how much does this one cost as opposed to the deep tube? Could you pay for one of these and an extra filter for later? or would that cost too much? And how long are you planning to stay in bangledesh? Would you be able to come back in 2 years to buy a new filter?

Just wanted to say you’re awesome shawn!! And do you have an address that i could send a check to for this project????
