Poormans’ Homemade Wine Filter

Monday, November 30th, 2009

With bottom ferment the wine will get quite clear after the first half gallon has passed thru.
~WARNING~ This is a bomb! Pressures may build up to +10 PSI and can potentially blast off the cap (blowout) thus messing up your area. (note the bulge in the base of the inverted fermentor) A metal wire should be used to secure the cap to prevent blowoff.
RED LASER is used to visually check progress must, lee levels and turbidity (cloudiness)
REFRIGERATE the wine below 40F but don’t freeze. This allow the lees to coagulate (clump) and fall down faster.
REMEMBER– the more ’stuff’ you have your wine in contact with, the more the wine loses taste!

Fluoride and The Pineal Gland

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

http://www.morethanalive.com/Berkey-Light?a_aid=9efe8e53&a_bid=aa6d3f83

The single animal study of pineal function indicates that fluoride exposure results in altered melatonin production and altered timing of sexual maturity. Whether fluoride affects pineal function in humans remains to be demonstrated. The two studies of menarcheal age in humans show the possibility of earlier menarche in some individuals exposed to fluoride, but no definitive statement can be made. Recent information on the role of the pineal organ in humans suggests that any agent that affects pineal function could affect human health in a variety of ways, including effects on sexual maturation, calcium metabolism, parathyroid function, postmenopausal osteoporosis, cancer, and psychiatric disease.
SOURCE: National Research Council. (2006). Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Scientific Review of EPA’s Standards. National Academies Press, Washington D.C. p221-22.

“In conclusion, the human pineal gland contains the highest concentration of fluoride in the body. Fluoride is associated with depressed pineal melatonin synthesis by prepubertal gerbils and an accelerated onset of sexual maturation in the female gerbil. The results strengthen the hypothesis that the pineal has a role in the timing of the onset of puberty. Whether or not fluoride interferes with pineal function in humans requires further investigation.”

What is the best way to clean tubs & glass shower doors when you have very hard water?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

we have a whole house filter and iron machine but our well water is still full of minerals, sulfur, and iron

Use a wiper blade after every shower to remove water – so reducing the problem to begin with.
Try vinegar, an oven cleaner, or even Brake Cleaner from a car accessory shop. (spray lightly onto a cloth). Regards. UK

What to do about iron-eating bacteria???

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

I think that my well water has this problem….any ideas? Water is high in iron to start with. We have a water softener and a filter. I still notice an iron taste, but recently noticed a subtle sulfur smell, which I believe may be from iron eating bacteria.

The iron can be managed with a filtration system. I don’t know about your financial situation, but there is a system that injects your water with potassium permanganate. This chemical allows the iron molecules to clump and are filtered through a sand bed filter. This filter has to be backwashed periodically. They do make home units that will do this, but it can be spendy.

A larger filter unit with the proper filter may take care of that problem.

As for the sulpher, it you smell it in the cold water, your well may need to be shocked. This involves the addition of chlorine into your well, let it sit for 8 hours minimum, and then you flush the system until you can no longer smell chlorine. Just about any well driller will do this for a fee. It isn’t that bad considering it will eliminate the problem.

Good luck!

My 300 litre aquarium ( 1st day using co2 setup)

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

As already stated i upgraded my tank with a co2 system to help my live plants trive more in my tank.

Update from last vid is i added 2 albino cories making them 3 and 2 julii cories, changed the whole setting of plants ( plus trimming those swords ) and decorations ( tried some aqua scaping ) and added 3 new plants :

Echinodorus el diablo
Hygrophila corymbosa XL
Cryptocoryne walkeri

as for Co2 setup, the pet shop owner told me to start with 4 bubbles a second and then ajust daily, so wish me luck any tips are really welcome.

Now for the tanks:

Jebo New R3126,

dimensions : 4ft, x 50cm x 58cm 300 litre ( 66 uk gal )

Filtration: Trickle filter conected to a powerhead 1500litres/hour
Support canister filtration Eheim classic 2213 which helps filtration up to 116 gallons/hour
2 filtration systems is to help do all the mechanical chemical etc.

Lighting :
3 jebo super light tubes 2 45w bright white and 1 35w blue

Water Parameters:

No3: 25 ( think the iron supliment and plantmin plus crypto fertiliser had something to do from 10 – 15 to 25 but its still safe )
no2: under 3 g/l
amonia- 0
ph 7 daytim 7.5 night
kh 6
co2 18ppm ( according to a calculator)

Air stone running only when lights are off and co2 is left always on to prevent ph fluctuation ( did my home work :P ).

Fish:
Fish:
6 angels ( assorted ) 1 koy 2 half back ( 1 veiltail ) 2 platinum and 1 black
2 bosemani rainbows
2 red rainbows
1 synodontis
1 royal pleco hiding under drift wood ( hes not in this vid but the other )
3 blue ( 3 spot ) gouramis 2 female 1 male
2 pearl gouramis ( still a bit shy as they have been there only 2 days )
3 clown loaches
2 bala sharks
1 peacock eel ( have a vid were i hand feed it blood worms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C10qZz… )
5 kuhli loaches
3 albino corys
2 julii cory
2 flying foxes

I am just over stocked but with hard maintanace i keep everything in check.

thanks for watching please leave comments and rate to your liking, comments and tips are really welcome to a beginer in co2 injection.

If i see improvments in plants i will upload another vid next week

iron in my water and want to fill my pool?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I got tons of iron in my water it turns everything orange i wanted to fill our swimming pool up i got for my kids, i did this last year and they came out of the water orange, it was so funny! but i got a pool w a filter and wanted to know what kind of chemicals to put in the water to take the iron out

Water color resulting from oxidized metals can come in an assortment of colors, and is mostly translucent in its early stages. Green, red, brown, and black are some of the more common colors produced by dissolved metals. Green color is usually produced by either copper or iron. Red and brown colors are generated by iron. Black/brown pool water is usually caused by manganese.

Often these colored water conditions appear after a pool is initially filled or after a shock treatment. If the fill water contains metals, it should be treated with a sequestering agent and/or clarifier prior to chlorine additions. A shock treatment can cause metals to oxidize, which allows them to fall out of solution and become more visually apparent.

1. Adjust pH & alkalinity to recommended ranges.
2. Add sequestering agent & run filter.
3. Two days later, shock treat the water.
4. Retest pH & alkalinity. Also test hardness levels &, if necessary, raise to 200 ppm, minimum.

Take a pool sample to a pool professional for dissolved metals testing immediately after treatment and at least once a month.

Why does my water smell like sulfur and how do I eliminate the problem?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

OK, first of all here’s my raw water quality: 350TDS, 1.4ppm Iron, 20 grains hardness, no sulfur. Now, softened water quality: 375TDS, 0ppm Iron, 0 grains hardness, unknown sulfur quantity. Private well. Inline sediment filter installed. Hot water heater is about 140 degrees and anode rod is removed.

Toilet bowls acquire a thin, orangish slime over a period of about 2 weeks. Inside of toilet tanks can sometimes coated with black or dark gray slime. Cold, softened water smells like eggs. Hot water is hard to tell, though may be slightly detectable. No iron stains on fixtures or corrosion.

I’ve shocked chlorinated entire system. Only helped temporarily. Sulfur test done by technician on raw water. I will try for softened water also.

Any ideas and what to do about it? Thanks for any help!

You might need a new anode rod in the water heater, but that would only affect the hot water. You will need to install an iron ox. Looks just like a water softener without the extra salt tank on the side of it.

iron and sediment in well water?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Ok so we just bought a house, it has its own well and has been uninhabited for a year. However whenever you turn the faucets on a bunch of yellow water comes out. From previous experiences I have always just went outside and turned the frost free hydrant on full bore, and then the water would clear up after about 5 hours, but this was a remedy to a home that had only been uninhabited for a few weeks, anyone have any other suggestions or tips? Oh we also have an inline water filter which helps filter out quite a bit of the junk
Thank you in advance!
I have changed my inline filter too, the pipes are not rusty and the water has been tested.

. I’d definitely get that water TESTED. It’s possible the entire pipe system needs cleaning or replacing. rusty. And does the water taste or smell strange? Something could have fallen into the well. ugh.
Get a professional plumber in there who knows wells.
And change that filter.
It could be organic iron. according to this site @ http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/factsheets/ironFS.htm ; .

Im looking for suggestion for a really good Shower Water Filter.?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I live in an apartment complex that DOES have a water softener but I think the PH levels are out of wack because several of the people in the building complain about itchy skin, scalp issues and those of us with blonde hair now have rust/orange colored hair.
When the landlord is confronted he states that the water company has already come out and things are "fine".
I on the other hand tend to disagree … because my hair is still a rustic orange instead of a beautiful blonde – and my scalp is still flakin’ up a storm.

My skin shouldnt feel like it is, my scalp shouldnt be giving me flake issues and for the amount of money I spend on my hair it shouldnt be orange…. PLEASE HELP

Can someone with a similar situation please suggest a Shower Filter that has worked for them – I’d like the name of a brand of Filter – not just a store where I can find one (most of the ones HD, Lowes and what not carries only takes out Chlorine, I need one that takes out Iron as well.

Thank You!

go to walmart and go to bathroom supplies and get the rain fall filter it works great

How can I remove fine silt from the bottom of my pool?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I have a small pool and there’s a very fine silt settling on the bottom. I’ve tried using the pool vacuum to clean it, but the vacuum just stirs it up. While the filter is cleaning out a lot of it, it seems that most of it just ends up settling on the bottom again. I go through endless cycles of trying to vacuum with unsatisfactory results, and stirring the water to keep the stuff moving so the filter can have a chance to catch it. It seems my attempts are futile. Any ideas?

Pool Information:
- 10′diameter, 4′ deep (inflatable)
- Hard water (bacterial iron)
- Filters have been changed every 2 weeks (more if needed)
- Clarifier was added to try to get rid of the silt

I had this problem with my pool. It turned out that a part in the filter had a small crack, allowing the sand to continue to shoot out in the return water. You can vacuum it up, but continues to shoot back out. You will have to have the part replaced, which was under $30 in my case.
