water filters

For a constant supply of fresh, clean water you might consider purchasing a water filter that attaches onto your kitchen faucet.  You can use your filtered water for making beverages or ice cubes or simply to drink safe water. According to Health magazine drinking contaminated tap water causes about 7 million Americans to become ill on a yearly basis. Good Housekeeping and other sources claim that inexpensive faucet water filters do a good job of removing impurities form you tap water.  If your tap water has a bit of a foul taste to it the faucet water filter does an excellent job at removing these unwanted tastes.

Faucet Water Filter System Compared to Bottled Water

Typically, receiving filtered clean water from a faucet filter is less expensive than purchasing the same amount of bottled water. Surprisingly, a lot of the latest research contends that most bottled water is not healthier for you and your family than the basic water from the taps in your house. The FDA sets standards for bottled water however, the standards only apply if the bottled water is transported and sold outside the state where it was bottled. The FDA only asks the bottled water companies to ensure that the bottled water is at the same quality of tap water. If you want to make sure the water you and your family drink is free from most contaminants you might really want to consider purchasing a water filtration system, such as the type that easily attaches to your faucet.

Specifics Concerning Faucet Water Filter Systems

Most of these systems have a lever attached to the unit so you can choose filtered water for drinking purposes or just basic tap water. The units are very affordable and don’t cost that much more than a filtered water pitcher and most brands are simple to install onto your faucet. The filters usually have to be thrown away and replaced with a new one about every three months. The filters typically cost about $15 and they usually produce approximately 100 gallons of filtered water. With some expensive faucet water filter units you never replace the filter. Some brands offer a light that changes colors to indicate that you will need to change your filter in a certain period of time, such as two weeks.

An annual county water quality report is required to be available to people in any county in America and so you can check what the experts say about the quality of your water. The EPA website also offers information about the water quality in your area. Considering the health improvements, the taste of filtered water compared to typical tap water and the savings you will achieve by not buying bottle water, purchasing a faucet water filter unit for your home might be a very good idea.

Water Filters, Faucet or Pitcher?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Hi, can anyone tell me the pro’s and con’s of using the following:

1. Brita Faucet Filters http://www.brita.com/us/products/faucet-filtration/
2. Brita Pitchers http://www.brita.com/us/products/water-pitchers/
3. Pur Faucet Filters (Any of the 3)
4. Pur Pitcher

I’m trying to decide between faucet and pitchers, what are the differences, and are there any other reputable brands i should look at?

Thanks!

I used to have the regular pitchers, but now I have a rectangular one that looks like a flat water cooler and sits in the fridge. It has a spout you can open and close at the end. It’s made by Brita. It holds more and is more convenient to use.

Never used the filters for the faucet, because I don’t need to filter all the water I use; just the water I will drink or (rarely) boil some food in.

Is it ok to drink water from your tap or faucet if you have a water filter on it to purify the water?

Friday, January 15th, 2010

or is it better to buy bottled water?

How many impurities do water filters remove and what’s a good kind of water filter to buy?

It’s better to use tap water if you have good water and add a filter to improve quality, taste, and smell. Plastic bottles are filling up landfills and take years to degrade. In addition, some plastics leak chemicals that disrupt normal hormone levels.

There are many different types of water filters. Personally, I like the brita pitcher with replaceable filters that you can easily change every few months. The tap water does taste and smell better. If you have a newer fridge it may have a GE water filter built in, those work well too, but may cost more and last longer. Check out the website below for more details on different types of water filters.

Brita uses activated carbon and is supposed to filter out impurities such as chlorine, lead, copper, mercury, giardia, and more. Now that I am accustom to using the filter I can definetly taste the difference immediately!
