Community Aquarium 55glln. #1

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This tank has Guppies, Serpai Tetra’s, Buenos Aires Tetra’s about 3in long each, Tiger Barb’s, Cory’s, Plecostamus about 9in long, Shark/Catfish 6in long, Giant Danio’s, Blue Gourami’s, and various plants and decorations. Hope you enjoy. They provide hours of entertainment for the entire family. This tank has been setup for about 6 yrs now. I have a Magnum 350 Pro with Bio-Wheel’s and a Topfin 60 filter, doing all the dirty work, and I do 25% water changes atleast twice a week. The lighting is (2) dual 48in long utility shop fluorescent fixtures ($10ea), with (4) 40 Watt “plant and aquatic” bulbs from GE ($10ea). This setup provides a total of 160 Watts of beautiful warm natural lighting. The plants grow great, and the fish look amazing in them. The lighting cost me about $60, versus several hundred if bought commercially. Bought everything I needed at Lowe’s in one trip.

Water Filters, Faucet or Pitcher?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Hi, can anyone tell me the pro’s and con’s of using the following:

1. Brita Faucet Filters http://www.brita.com/us/products/faucet-filtration/
2. Brita Pitchers http://www.brita.com/us/products/water-pitchers/
3. Pur Faucet Filters (Any of the 3)
4. Pur Pitcher

I’m trying to decide between faucet and pitchers, what are the differences, and are there any other reputable brands i should look at?

Thanks!

I used to have the regular pitchers, but now I have a rectangular one that looks like a flat water cooler and sits in the fridge. It has a spout you can open and close at the end. It’s made by Brita. It holds more and is more convenient to use.

Never used the filters for the faucet, because I don’t need to filter all the water I use; just the water I will drink or (rarely) boil some food in.

How do you get rid of the sulfur smell of well water?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

We have a farmhouse in rural WI. We put in a water filter and softener, but the smell is still there. I’m sure other people have encountered this problem. Please give me advice on what’s worked for you. Thanks!

An activated carbon filter should do the trick.

Alternately, if you are concerned about water for cooking and drinking consider installing a reverse osmosis filter.

why is my pool water brown and green. i used iron chemicals. and shocked still the same.?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

my pool water was clear when i filled my swimming pool, then i added chlorine and it turned brown almost instantly. i purchased iron and medal chemical and it helped alot and then i shaocked it about 3-4 hours later and it turned brown again.the bottom of the pool has a lot of resadu on it and when i tuch it it floats away i think its the iron from the water. how do i get that to filter out.what should i do to get crystal clear water. im going crazy. the pool is above ground 14"x3 1/2 deep.. thank you

Cynthia so far is the closest one to solving this, don’t listen to these others

Everybody is a closet pool pro. I once had a customer swear he could check Ph with his finger, but then again he’s the same guy that we had to do a complete filtration and heater swap out because it was eaten by low Ph and TA. It’s hard to diagnose an issue without seeing and a little more info would be helpful, but here’s a few things to do and look for.
I have to assume it’s well water you use for fill. The green is normal, it’s algae. Even city water pools will have a slight green tinge when they are first filled and not yet going. Filtration, correct water balance ( Ph 7.2-7.6 ,Cl 1.5-3.0 and TA 80-120 ) and a shock will keep the green monster at bay. The chlorine reaction you saw, was likely one or both of these: 1/ Reacting with algae (usually a foam or bubble action) or 2/ Reacting with iron bacteria causing brownish lumps to form in the water column.
The brown ,in all likelyhood, is iron. It’s prevalent in well water and most outside taps used to fill pools, don’t run through your house’s water softner. The metals remover you added will cause metals in solution to fall out, dropping to the pool bottom. Normal. Just vac it up with filter set to waste. Make sure the pool is filled all the way to do this, as you will be removing as much water as it takes to clean the bottom. If you did it on "filter", you’ll plug it up in no time and the amount of backwash water used will be even more, by the time you’re done. Also, before you add any thing else to the water, take a sample, in a clean container that you rinsed in your pool water to your local pool pro. They all have Labs and will anaylize your water for no charge. Take a sample of your fill water as well. If the iron is too high, you may be wise to find an alternate source or change your plumbing slightly, and use the softner.

Water dispenser and ice maker stopped working?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

I have a GE model Gsh25kgrb ww refridgerator with water/ice dispenser. About a month ago I noticed it would not dispense water, I changed the water filter and still nothing, yesterday I noticed I had no more ice. I took things apart and started troubleshooting. I have water going to the filter, coming out of the filter the water is good then the water goes to the valve and splits off in two directions one goes up to the ice maker and the other line goes under the fridge over to the bottome of the freezer door then up to the water dispenser. There is a coupling in the line before it goes into the freezer door, I disconnected the water line at the coupling then pressed the dispenser lever and water starting coming out of the coupling however when I reconnect the water line nothing comes out of the dispenser. Im not sure why im not making Ice it could be operater error, I noticed a swing arm underneath the ice make and that could be in the wrong position, im not sure what this arm is for. The ice maker switch is in the ON position.
Last night I lowered the freezer setting because I was not getting water or ice from my freezer door. I took everything out of the freezer and unplugged it for 4 hours when I plugged it back in after about 2 min. of holding the dispenser flap I got a small gush of water then just drips after that. I left the fridge plugged in last night with the freezer set to 1 Lowest setting, and this morning I still got an initial gush then just drips, I also notice small ice cubes about 60% of the original ice cube size. Any suggestions.

Turn the icemaker off for more than 30 seconds, then turn it back on and press in on the white lever three times. The icemaker should cycle and run water. If it does run water the first thing you should look for is blocked airflow.

Make sure the fan in the freezer is running.

Look at the back freezer wall and see if there is thick ice/frost on it. If so you most likely have a defrost problem. Remove the back panel off the freezer and if ice is completely blocking the coils from top to bottom you have a defrost problem. If ice is partially blocking the coils you may have an air leak such as door gasket or the flap inside the ice shoot in the door could be hung open, a bad thermistor, or a refrigeration problem. This URL will help with all of that http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/GE-refrigerator-repair.html

I think your water line if frozen either in the fresh food section or in the freezer door. To determine where the line if frozen take the line loose under the freezer door and attempt to dispense water. If you are getting water there the line is frozen in the door and if not the line is frozen in the fresh food section.

To unthaw the line if the door open the door and press the door switch and repeatedly attempt to dispense water until water comes out. If the flap inside the ice shoot is hung open it will cause cold air to freeze the water line. If the flap isn’t hung open GE makes a heater that will keep this from happing again part number WR49X10173. For more on this visit this URL http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/GE-refrigerators.html.

If the water line if frozen in the fresh food section remove the drawers in the bottom and use a hair drier to thaw out the line. Blocked airflow will cause this line to freeze.

I hope this helps!
