I’m trying to loosen a water filter to get it off the faucet. I am standing it front of the sink looking down

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

do I turn the pipe wrench clockwise or counterclockwise? Just asked and everyone said counterclockwise till a women said it made a difference if you are looking down or up at it, so which is right

Also It is plastic and stuck and bits of plastic are flaking off when I try to turn, if it is stuck, what will help loosen it? I don’t want to break it. Thanks for answering both questions.

If you’re looking down at it turn it clockwise to loosen.

When I run the water in kitchen sink, kids bathroom & washing machine, it smells like rotten eggs. Help?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

we have private well and installed a water softener, inline filter and bacteria light. we first noticed the bad smell after a 2 week vacation & when we returned, the water oder was horrible & now it only smells in 3 areas. why is that? what do we do?

You may have sulfer in the water. You may need to add a filter that will remove the odor.

iron in my water and want to fill my pool?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I got tons of iron in my water it turns everything orange i wanted to fill our swimming pool up i got for my kids, i did this last year and they came out of the water orange, it was so funny! but i got a pool w a filter and wanted to know what kind of chemicals to put in the water to take the iron out

Water color resulting from oxidized metals can come in an assortment of colors, and is mostly translucent in its early stages. Green, red, brown, and black are some of the more common colors produced by dissolved metals. Green color is usually produced by either copper or iron. Red and brown colors are generated by iron. Black/brown pool water is usually caused by manganese.

Often these colored water conditions appear after a pool is initially filled or after a shock treatment. If the fill water contains metals, it should be treated with a sequestering agent and/or clarifier prior to chlorine additions. A shock treatment can cause metals to oxidize, which allows them to fall out of solution and become more visually apparent.

1. Adjust pH & alkalinity to recommended ranges.
2. Add sequestering agent & run filter.
3. Two days later, shock treat the water.
4. Retest pH & alkalinity. Also test hardness levels &, if necessary, raise to 200 ppm, minimum.

Take a pool sample to a pool professional for dissolved metals testing immediately after treatment and at least once a month.

Brackish well water?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I have a GE Smartwater RO unit under my sink (dual stage) which I just got up and running with new pre and post filters and a new membrane, after it being out of use for quite some time (I’ve only lived here a couple months.)

I sanitized the system and purged it 3 times, then tasted the water. While there is a noticeable difference in the salt level, it is still there. My well can run from deathly salty to fairly mild.

Regardless of the salt level in the well, shouldn’t the RO have removed the majority of the salt content? Because I’m still tasting it, would purging the unit a couple more times help?

Yes, Reverse Osmosis is used to remove salt from water, Those de-salinisation plants off the coast of Saudia Arabia use reverse osmosis to supply millions of gallons daily of fresh water to their major cities.

You are probably removing the majority, if not all of the salt from the water using the Reverse Osmosis membranes as initially cleaned and installed. However, Odor and taste is another thing that can raise havoc with those membranes and allow your water to retain those undesireable tastes and odors and inactivate your membranes.
You will need to add a carbon filter to the system to remove those. I suggest that you add this AHEAD of the RO system as any small amounts of such contaminants shortens the membrane live, so its best to use carbon to rid of them first. I am quite confident that a carbon filter ahead of RO will fix things for you. It will not plug up with the salt, so dont fear of that.

Do I need a water softener pillow and a pH lower for my fish?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I am getting some Amazonian fish like discus and angels and wanted to ask if they need soft water and low pH. I have some peat running through the filter and am getting Indian Almond Leaves. If they do need soft water I was going to get the API Water Softener Pillow and the Seachem Acid/Alkaline Buffer. Thanks

I have hard water where i live and i have Mbuna so im really lucky!

Those fish however need softer water and clean water. If you can maintain all that and keep it on a tight schedule go for it. But sometimes people forget or get lazy and dont maintain that then the water will start changing, that is what usually kills fish, the drastic change.

Ive asked some discus owners if they do treatments and some say that they dont. They even said that the reputation is sometimes overblown. Keep the water clean, if you are going to do treatments make sure you keep to it, and get drift wood. Drift wood is part of their natural environment and looks really nice plus it will make your water soft too.

Why does my water smell like sulfur and how do I eliminate the problem?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

OK, first of all here’s my raw water quality: 350TDS, 1.4ppm Iron, 20 grains hardness, no sulfur. Now, softened water quality: 375TDS, 0ppm Iron, 0 grains hardness, unknown sulfur quantity. Private well. Inline sediment filter installed. Hot water heater is about 140 degrees and anode rod is removed.

Toilet bowls acquire a thin, orangish slime over a period of about 2 weeks. Inside of toilet tanks can sometimes coated with black or dark gray slime. Cold, softened water smells like eggs. Hot water is hard to tell, though may be slightly detectable. No iron stains on fixtures or corrosion.

I’ve shocked chlorinated entire system. Only helped temporarily. Sulfur test done by technician on raw water. I will try for softened water also.

Any ideas and what to do about it? Thanks for any help!

You might need a new anode rod in the water heater, but that would only affect the hot water. You will need to install an iron ox. Looks just like a water softener without the extra salt tank on the side of it.

my refridgerator stopped giving me water out the door?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

we have a ge side by side and i figured the filter was old and now it wont give any water.i un plugged the quick connect blue and white fitting bottom under door and have no presuser.i blew the line threw to the water outlet in door dispenser and its clear

Sounds to me like your solenoid is bad. Do make sure there is water to the back of the fridge from the wall valve..

What is an average life for a water softener? Ours is 6yrs and have had several malfunction.?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

I have cleaned the innards several times but found no blockage but it works afterwards. Could I manuallly cycle it and then unplug it ? Would the water still flo thru the filter material?

A good one around else lasts a long time. 20 years.
A Sears Kenmore softner seems to last 10 around here.
