Whole House Water Filter vs plastic bottles

“How can Whole House Water Filtration Systems reduce our reliance on plastic bottles?”

Click on the HD button on the lower right end corner of the screen for a higher quality video.

Answer is simple. If you have a high quality water filtration system, the water from every tap in your home is as high as and in some cases better than any drinking water youll fine in a plastic bottle. You can stop buying expensive bottled water and drink safely straight from the faucet. You can purchase reusable bottles and fill those with good tasting tap water. Now you wont be throwing away the plastic bottles and adding to the 38 billion plastic water bottles put into landfills each year. We have a serious environmental problem and one helpful win-win way to address that problem is to purchase a whole house water filter system.

Pitcher filters, faucet filters, or just plain old bottled water – which works best on a budget?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I’m not looking to get into a debate of whether or not tap water in the US is safe or not! Please don’t reply to tell me the water is ok…

I live in central PA and they’re switching their water systems from using chlorine (which I wasn’t thrilled about to begin with) to "chloramine".. Now all I drink is tap water and because of the medicine I’m on, I drink a LOT of it! We’re also looking into having children and it would be an EXTREMELY high risk pregnancy, so It’s really important to me to have out all excess chemicals as much as possible. (Heck I’m more worried about the chemicals than the bacteria now, thanks to the water company!)

However, we’re also on a budget! What’s the cheapest EFFECTIVE way to filter water- the kind that attaches to a faucet, the pitcher type, or is my best bet to stick with bottled water for drinking instead of playing with filters?

If you’re going to be drinking LOTS of water then I’d go with the filter you attach to the faucet. It works great and they don’t cost an arm and a leg. I have the Brita. The pitcher filters work ok, but it’s a pain having to refill the pitcher all the time and then wait for it to filter through so you can drink it. The very best filters are usually the under the sink type, but they also cost the most.

is softened water filtered through refrigerator filter safe to drink?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I just purchased a new refirgerator with a built in ice maker and water dispenser. The problem is, I have a water softener and did not have the refrigerator water bypassed. I do have a R/O filter under the sink for drinking water and was wondering if the filter on the refrigerator was enough to filter the water.

I have never had an RO filter but have had wells with softeners. The water is fine to drink.

our well water sometimes is orange?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

the water from our well will sometimes turn orange, the guy who drilled it for us said that it is a bacteria that feeds on iron in water and that it is harmless. When it does this, there is no odor as there is with high iron content water. He says there must be just enough iron in it for the bacteria to live. We have tried a water filter (whole house, in line, the kind you can get at Lowe’s or Walmart) and in just a few hours the filter will be plugged and the pressure next to nothing. We are not using a filter at present as this is A LOT cheaper. The driller told us to put these tablets (chlorine or similar) down the well, recirculate the water for several hours and then run water out the outside hose for another hour. This helps and for awhile the water is nice and clear but eventually it starts to get cloudy again. He said we might have to put a couple tabs down the well every day to keep it clear. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Could the pump be too low in the hole?

Your well man is 100 % correct. depending on how good of water you would like to acheive, there are other options. But they will cost you some money. Many times a softner will clear this up. I would suggest an Autotrol softener, 32000 grain with meter. They last the longest and have little if any trouble as far as service is concerned. In some cases you may want to install a green sand filter or both. There is also a Chlorinator which will add the chemical automatically. My boss has a well and had all three installed and his water is like city water, but better. Because of the high costs, I would take a clean sample of water to have tested and see exactly what you would need for your situation. If you really want to go all out, you can install an IROC system. which will take out the chlorine after treatment.

You can turn this water into GREAT water depending on how much you want to spend. If you have anymore questions, feel free to email me.

How often do you change out water filter in fridge?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My husband and I have had our fridge for about 4 years and have never changed out the water filter because honestly we just never thought about it! I am getting a new water filter today because I’m pregnant and have been thinking of everything and realized how long the filter has been on there. It’s a Smart Water filter by GE and I was told today it should be changed out every 6 months!! Eek, we haven’t changed it in 4 years! Could this be harmful? When I took it off, it looked clean…thanks!
Just wanted to add that the woman at GE said that the water will start slowing down when it is ready to be changed and ours has never slowed down!

I have the GE profile side by side with icemaker and water through the door and filter behind. My instruction manual does say to change the filter every 6 months. That being said, I did forget to do it and the water kept flowing for a while to the ice maker and water dispenser. Once it stopped, I called the warranty repair and the technician told me that it isn’t harmful, you are just essentially getting regular, unfiltered tap water through the dispensers. The problem ocurred for us because the tap water here is very hard and the mineral deposits eventually clogged the line which stopped the water from getting to the ice/water dispenser, blew the line off where it enters the fridge and created a huge water mess while the fridge thought it needed to provide water to the dispensers.

Water Softener?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I know that water softeners can’t make the water lethal or they’d be illegal. But what i want to know if that since the sodium in the water is enough to warn people with high blood pressure not to bathe in it, then obviously we’re talkin somewhat high sodium levels coming thru the water. So- I have a baby and since we’ve had the water softener installed I’ve been making his bottles with bottled water.
I was wondering if this is completely necessary and if so- could adding one of those water filters onto the faucet do any good?
The man at the hardware store we got out softener at actually warned up beforehand that most people quit drinking their tap water and goto bottle as it changes the taste of the water. He also warned us of the sodium/heart problem issue.

The amount of sodium in the water after it goes through the water softener depends on how hard the water was going into the softener. For most people, the amount of sodium is not significant enough to cause a problem. An example is that many foods like cake or soda or canned soup are a much more significant source of sodium.

That is not saying your water is safe since there may be other things in the water that a softener doesn’t take out. That is why the previous suggestion of a reverse osmosis drinking water system is great. It will take out the sodium plus a bunch of other things. On the other hand, a Brita filter will not take out sodium. It is really made to take out chlorine and improve the taste.
